Introduction
Egypt has become for a long time a significant aspect in the history of United States of America and the international community. Egypt is among the largest owners of oil wells as well as distinct tourist attractions. The pyramids of Egypt have always attracted several individuals from across the globe. In addition, its dominance of the ancient way of governance displays the uniqueness that has been eroded in other countries. United States of America has had an interest in Egypt in the sense that it could be able to gain control over some of its oil wells. United States had supplied its troops to assist the Egyptian soldiers provide security and law and order in their country (Kirkpatrick & Fahim, 2013). The international community was concerned about the rate at which Egypt was collapsing resulting from poor governance.
The quest for democracy is considered one of the leading causes of battles between and among Egyptians. Ever since the Egypt was declared a republic in 1953, it has encountered massive demonstrations, wars and riots resulting from denial of human rights. Bombings targeting foreigners were evident in some parts of the country. Assassination of their earlier leaders took place in several accounts for instance in 1981 when Anwar al-Sadat was assassinated by Jihad members. Such acts accelerated the amount of hate among the rivaling individuals and groups. It was clear that the citizens did not have any freedom of expressions as witnessed from the harassment and arrest of journalists who were trying to expose the government’s cruel acts. On other accounts, the new constitutions brought tension since it stripped the judiciary of its powers to try to scrutinize decisions made by the president. The July 2013 military coup that targeted on ousting the Islamists was of international concern given that it implicated on human rights (Tamimi, 2014). The July 2013 military coup in Egypt came after the supporters and opponents of President Mohamed Morsi could not agree on anything. This emerged because Morsi and his close allies, the Muslim Brotherhood took power upon themselves. The judicial systems could not question any decision made by the president yet during the campaigns; President Morsi told the citizens that people power was more supreme. Being the first elected leader in the history of Egypt, Morsi was believed to bring change but what was witnessed illustrated a complete opposite of people’s expectation. It was the wish of the international community that Egypt adopted democracy as it was portraying much discrimination along religious and ethnic lines (Aziz, 2013). That was thought to be dragging the economy of a nation whose prosperity could be huge considering their richness in terms of oil that is attracting super power nations like the United States of America.
The coup took place after the military officials cautioned the president and his opponents to resolve their internal issues because it had spread to the citizens. A 48 hours ultimatum was issued (Kirkpatrick & Fahim, 2013). However, it was evident that the military had been planning to oust the president from power given that there had been several accounts of demonstrations across the country demanding that Morsi and his administration be dissolved. General Abdel-Fatah El-Sisi asserted that President Morsi wanted to use his power to misuse the supreme authority bestowed upon him by the people who elected him. Another major effect is the fact that the event could not allow humanitarian aid to be supplied freely. Humanitarian institutions had to halt their activities in Egypt and neighboring countries especially those of Arab origin because they could not assure its workers of their security. Human rights were violated thus the United Nations had a hard time trying to address such issues. Multinational organizations doing businesses with Egypt had to stop their operations for the period there was political instability. This means several companies recorded low revenue during the year and part of the next financial year. In addition, some agencies that had experienced destabilization in their businesses had to pull out. Significantly, the African Union had to re-evaluate the participation of Egypt given that it was putting the continent at risk. Political, social and economic ties with other continents were weakening slowly.
Key political roles of the participants
Each of the actors during the event played an important political role. The military led by General El-Sisi played a major role since it organized the coup and executed it according to their plans. The military ensured that President Morsi could not remain in power for any longer because he had misused his power and intimidated the basic rights of the citizens. On the contrary, the military caused the suspension of the operation of the constitution hence there was no democracy (Kirkpatrick & Fahim, 2013). The United States played a political role where it did not declare the event as a military coup in order to ensure humanitarian aid could continue flowing in the country.
