GG369 FINAL EXAM 2022
* Please note that the file MUST be submitted as a PDF or there may be a
delay in grading.
This is a take home exam that might be slightly different than any exam you have done before.
You are to answer 3 of the given 6 questions. You will also need to make the map. Now external
research isn’t necessary (meaning you don’t need references) but the ideas should, for the
most part, be yours. Express your opinions and back it up with ideas learned in the course and
discussed on the message boards. Your exam is due digitally (as a PDF file) to the MLS dropbox
by ARIL 11th at NOON. This exam, if scheduled normally, would be given a time cap of 2.5
hours.
This is an exam, not an assignment, so you are required to work alone and to not do so is
considered academic dishonesty (meaning the file will be subjected to ‘Turnitin’). Also, no late
exams (even 1 minute) will be accepted.
Answer thee of the following 6 questions on a separate sheet. No answer may be more than
500 words (not included references if you decide to use them; also you can include all the
figures you want) and you must include a word count for each answer. Anything written over
the word limit will not be read. You will be assessed on the quality and depth of your answer.
This includes thoughts being well backed up, original ideas and quality of writing. Make sure to
be clear what questions you are answering.
Good Luck and have a nice end of summer!
1) What is GIS? Describe how GIS could be used to further academic studies in a field you are
interested in.
2) Describe the importance of colour when making a map. How can cartographic design
influence the perspective of the map viewer?
3) What is multi-criteria analysis? How could multi-criteria analysis be used to locate something
such as an Orchard?
4) Why do Projections matter in GIS? How does the use of the map being made impact the
decision of projection used?
5) There are many types of overlay analysis in GIS. Explain the three different types of
topological overlays and, while incorporating different operators (identity, intersect,
symmetrical difference, union, update), give examples of how each could be applied in the
‘real-world’.
6) What is data interpolation? What are the limitation of data interpolation and why must
scientists be care in using in?
THE MAP:
For this part of the exam, you are to make a map using ArcGIS. Seeing as we have had so
many issues with data and GIS we will use a data set we know works. For the final we will
use the same data that we used for the midterm. The data can be found in MyLS in the
Content section under the slightly confusing title of ‘Mid-term Data’. I don’t want to change
anything with the data just to make sure it will work.
What you need to do is use the available data to illustrate which hospitals in Hamilton,
Ontario are within 1.5 km of the Niagara escarpment. You can use the data however you
wish but this is the message you need to convey that information.
Create a layout and make sure you include all necessary cartographic elements. It must also
include an inset map (an area zoomed in) of any area of interest.
You can submit your map in this space as a JPEG or to the dropbox. Either is acceptabl e.
The Grades:
The three questions and the map will be weighted equally. This means that each answer is out
of (effectively for balancing purposes) 25 points and so is the map.
Checklist:
1) I have submitted a map
2) I have answered three questions
3) Everything is a PDF (where possible unless you need to take a scan/photo of a figure
made)
4) I have word counts for each
5) My name is on this and I submitted BEFORE noon on April 11th.
Why noon? Why not midnight? Well if you have an issue at noon, I can help at midnight I
cannot (I will not be awake. I am old). If, for some reason, you cannot upload email it to me in
the meantime.
