Before Attending the Event
This event is named “How Technology Has Changed What It’s Like to Be Deaf” (TED,
2020). This event interests me the most because of the presenter Rebecca Knill. Before attending
the event, I conducted a little background research on the presenter to know more about her. I
discovered that as one of the pioneer deaf individuals in society, she is both “anti-noise as well as
neutral” when it comes to sound. Nonetheless, she is a successful business manager at “Wells
Fargo” in a consultative role (NPR, 2020). The presenter is also an author known for the “Church
Dramas” book while partnering with various research groups as a tester for technology software
on hearing. This being the case, the experiences I hope to obtain from this event include the
following. First, I would like to understand the world from a deaf person’s perspective focusing
specifically on sign language.
Secondly, I would like to understand how technological advancements and evolution
have impacted the deaf community over the years. Has it made the communication process easier
and quicker for them? Are there any disadvantages linked to the use of technology by deaf
people? These are some of the questions that would be stuck in my mind as I focus on the event
ahead. The final experience I would like to learn entails what the deaf community goes through
in a world filled with discrimination and prejudice. On the other hand, the previous learning from
other classes that this event’s experience will build upon include sign languages. The classes
were focused on easing communications between the deaf and non-deaf individuals based on the
usage of sign language, whereby communications between the two parties can occur richly and
expressively. Thus, I hope to gain all these experiences and reflect upon previous learnings once
I watch the event.
